Holley Sniper installations can be incredibly simple. The Sniper is designed and sold as an entry-level system to replace/upgrade a carburetor or put on an engine designed for a carb. Holley did a great job with the Sniper, creating a system that is easy to install and user friendly.
When you install the system, you have the option of either using it for fuel only, or fuel and timing. If you're switching from a carb, the easiest, most straightforward installation is to just install the Sniper for fuel only. I'll admit, the first time I installed one of these systems on my vehicle several years ago, that's what I did. However, I quickly went back after a few weeks and added timing control.
Engines require air, fuel, and spark to run. The right amount at the right time is critical for performance and efficiency. Prior to computer controlled engines, timing was controlled with weights and springs in a distributor, with engine vacuum assisting based on engine demand. This was the old school "closed loop". 😊
Modern engines use variable ignition timing in a closed loop system to improve idle quality and fuel efficiency. Timing control is no longer restricted to a mechanical curve and vacuum signal. Spark timing can be adjusted up or down by any amount, at almost any operating condition.
When using computer controlled timing as found in Holley EFI, including Sniper, idle quality is greatly improved. Performance engines with large camshafts and/or fuels such as E85 can instantly start, idle, and run like modern vehicles. Additionally, when adding power adders such as turbos, superchargers, or nitrous, timing can be automatically adjusted to maximize performance and keep the engine safe. No need for external timing control, boost controller, etc.
Based on these benefits, at Truth Dyno and Performance we believe every Holley Sniper install should be configured for timing control. Otherwise, you're missing out on the complete modern vehicle experience!
